Sunshine in a pot! The Philodendron hederaceum 'Lemon Lime' or Philodendron Neon is very aptly named with those glorious heart-shaped leaves in shades from golden lime to emerald green. Catch her during growing season and you'll be blessed with the most beautiful pinky-gold baby leaves too, like this. Read her full care guide below

Light

With her golden-lime leaves, the Philodendron Neon will tolerate lower light than others in her family, but give her brighter light and she'll reward you with more of those gorgeous blush-gold baby leaves during growing season. No direct sunlight though or she'll burn.

Water

Give the Philodendron Lemon Lime a good drench when you water, then let her dry out in-between. In summer wait to water again when the top half is semi-dry, and in winter let the top half get completely dry. If you're unsure, wait a bit longer, as being too dry rather than too wet is a safer bet. Those big heart-shaped leaves benefit from a mist often in summer, less often in winter, especially helpful if dusty to let her leaves breathe. High humidity isn't a must, she'll tolerate typical NZ household humidity, but if you can provide higher humidity she'll reward you with even bigger leaves.

Soil

A fast-draining soil is ideal, we'd do about 75% potting mix and 25% perlite or similar. Unless she's growing, skip fertiliser, but in spring, summer and even autumn (if she's still popping out new leaves), we water with a half dose Groconut, but anything similar will be loved. If you're noticing rapid growth or know she's in old soil, move to full strength fertiliser to keep those nutrient levels topped up.

Philodendron Lemon Lime / Neon Pro Tips & Problem Solving

Browning leaves

If her leaves are losing that golden-lime brightness and becoming dull or brown, that's a sign she's thirsty. Check the soil and give her a good drink.

Yellow leaves

Okay, so we know she has yellowy leaves anyway, but if you notice one area going paler and yellower than normal, it could be a sign of too much light. Older leaves will naturally go yellow as they age, but if you're getting a lot of yellow leaves overall, not just on old leaves or on the side facing the light, it's normally a sign of over-watering. Check her soil to help you diagnose the cause (although if you're an over-waterer you probably know already).

Looong vines

Only a problem if you don't love this look! This Philodendron is definitely a viner but if you want more compact growth, trim the vines or pinch back growth tips to encourage her to fill out more.

Pet Safe?

No sorry, same as the rest of the Philodendron fam, the Lemon Lime or Neon is a no go in the pet front. Chewing or swallowing can irritate or cause swelling which could become serious. We'd be off to the vet if our pets chomped on any Philodendron. Best kept safely away from curious pets (and kids!). A definite 'do not chomp' warning for this girl.
